For over a decade, weight management has become a big problem in the United States, as the obesity rate continues to rise, especially in children. Because people are worried, many T.V. networks have decided to air shows that focus solely on weight control. MTV has devoted numerous episodes many of their “True Life” series to teen obesity. One such episode is titled “True Life: I’m Going to Fat Camp,” where teens go to a weight loss camp to assist in handling the physical and emotional challenges that come with obesity. Lifetime Channel began a new show just this spring titled “Cook Yourself Thin,” in which three hosts teach people how to cook some favorite American foods without the calories. Finally, probably the most well-known weight loss show is NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” Contestants on this show go to a fitness boot camp complete with personal trainers who have the individuals exercise everyday and a strict diet. These shows are a reflection of American society and the major problems we have with weight control.
MTV’s “True Life: I’m Going to Fat Camp” aired nearly five years ago, but several episodes featuring weight loss have since been aired on MTV . In the “I’m Going to Fat Camp” episode, three different teens went to a fat camp, while the cameras followed their daily lives . The teens talked to the cameras about the emotional problems that come with obesity, by telling the audience that they are picked on at school and that they usually have social problems. Also, the show documented how much weight the teens lost for the time they were at the place. This show is good for teens because it shows the effects of not watching what you eat. The show also seemed like it should be a wake up call to parents to make sure their children aren’t eating junk food all the time.
Lifetime’s “Cook Yourself Thin” is a show where three women cook some favored recipes by using substitutes where possible to take out extra calories. The show really focuses on portion control and how you can still eat good food, without all the extra calories. The only problem with the show is that it does not explain the benefits of exercise, which is also one of the main ways to lose weight. The shows is a good start for those who want to eat healthier and just don’t know how, but already do lots of physical activity .
“The Biggest Loser” on NBC is one of the most watched weight loss shows currently on T.V. The show features contestants who are obese to morbidly obese and who truly must have serious help. The show documents the contestants as they diet and exercise over the course of several months. This show is really great because it really shows the benefits of a good diet and lots of exercise, which are the keys to losing weight.
The fact that the shows listed above are just a few of the many different weight loss shows on television is a direct reflection of one of the main health concerns in our society, obesity. Hopefully, people who watch these shows will realize the effects of obesity and change their habits if need be, so Americans will be healthier in the future.

One of the main health issues in the United States today is obesity. Obesity can lead to diabetes, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and many other medical problems. There are many ways that people can reduce their risk for all of these problems. For those who are obese or morbidly obese, there is such thing as a fat farm, which can also be called fat camp. Another increasingly popular choice for those who are obese or morbidly obese is surgery. Finally, for those who are classified as overweight or obese, diet and exercise are good ways to start losing weight. The important thing to remember about all of these options is, much like an addiction, the person must realize there is a problem and want to fix it. The driving force behind all of these options is will power.
Weight loss camps and farms are designed for those who are obese or morbidly obese. At a weight loss camp, one’s food and exercise are strictly regulated. The problem with these camps is that it is hard to maintain this kind of regimen once the person is at home. Many people who go to these camps go home and immediately gain weight because no one is there to watch them like at the camp. However, if a person is diligent, the weight lost at a camp can be the start of a new life.
More and more people who are obese or morbidly obese are turning to weight loss surgery to help them lose weight. This option can be very costly and it takes years to finally get to the individual’s goal weight. The problem with surgery is that many times, it does not teach good eating habits, because the surgery just makes the patient’s stomach smaller, so the individual is only taught to eat smaller amounts. There can also be complications with the surgery if the patient’s body rejects the band that makes the stomach smaller. However, this is a sure way to lose weight. If the patient is committed to really making a life change then surgery can be a good thing. While the stomach is smaller, the patient should learn how to eat a healthy diet and start a good exercise routine, so when the stomach is back to its’ regular size, then the patient doesn’t gain the weight back again.
Studies have shown that the two things that are imperative to any kind of weight loss are diet and exercise. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly is an option for people of any kind of weight classification. These two things are also behind the other two options for weight loss listed above.
The options discussed above for weight loss are only a few of the choices people who are overweight, obese, or morbidly obese have. It is important for people to realize that being diligent is the only way you can keep the weight off. So, if you are trying to lose weight, pick the option that is best for your weight classification and then remember to be strict and you will reduce your risk of medical problems in the future.
